One diver died and another was hospitalized after both men were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard offshore Pensacola Beach on Saturday.
A 48-year-old man was pronounced dead by a local coroner, and a 28-year-old man was transported to an Alabama hospital in stable condition.
The Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report around 8:30 a.m. Saturday about a diving incident about 12 nautical miles southwest of Pensacola Beach.
The report states that the 48-year-old man went into cardiac arrest after surfacing too quickly and failed to resurface. The 28-year-old diver went into the water and found the man unconscious at the bottom. The second diver also began experiencing similar symptoms after resurfacing with the unconscious diver.
Watchstanders directed a Coast Guard Station Pensacola 45-foot medium rescue boat crew to the divers’ location. The crew took both divers to Pensacola Pier.
The 48-year-old man was pronounced deceased, and the 28-year-old was transferred via Life Flight to the Springhill Medical Center in Alabama in stable condition.
